★Gaze and brain activity patterns during accurate trajectory prediction of an occluded moving target, Japan society
    Koshizawa, R;Oki, K;Takayose, M
[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to clarify the cognitive processing of eye movements required for accurate prediction of the trajectory of a target moving in a parabolic path, even when the target becomes invisible during the movement.,[Method] Sixteen participants performed a task of following a target moving in a parabolic path on a computer display over 4.8 s with eye movements. The target was occluded during the movement (between 2.4 and 4.8 s after the start of the target movement). The participants' gaze activity and EEG were simultaneously measured while performing the above tasks. For the analysis of gaze activity, the position error (the distance between the gaze and the target) and gain of the gaze relative to the target were calculated. For the EEG analysis, EEG power was calculated by applying Hilbert transforms to the EEG frequency band of 12 to 20 Hz. Participants were divided into groups with small calculated position errors (hereafter, the group with successful trajectory prediction) and large calculated position errors (hereafter, the group with failed trajectory prediction), and the EEG power in the 12 to 20 Hz range was compared between the groups. The significance level was set at less than 5%. ,Results: In the successful group, there was a significant increase in EEG power in the left frontal area (between 1.707 and 1.732 s after the start of the target movement and between 2.498 and 2.538 s after), right parietal area (between 1.285 and 1.296 s after), right posterior temporal area (between 3.481 and 3.496 s after), and right visual area (between 3.486 and 3.498 s after) compared with the failed group. ,Discussion: The activity of the right posterior temporal area and right visual area obtained when accurately predicting the trajectory is thought to reflect the visual image of the occluded target. In addition, it is thought that attention to the speed and position of the moving target was carried out by the activity of the left frontal area and right parietal area before the target was occluded.
