窒素循環、南アジア、土壌環境、作物栄養, 圃場レベルから地球レベルでの窒素循環についての研究を行ってきました。「緑の革命」の負の部分とも言うべき過剰施肥による窒素汚染の緩和策として、BNI（生物的硝化抑制）技術の開発と普及に取り組んでいます。
